Girlfriend

This week's album of the week is Matthew Sweet's masterpiece, Girlfriend.

Released in October 1991, I first learned of Matthew Sweet when I heard the single Girlfriend on the radio (it reached #4 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart).  Oddly enough, I somehow missed the video which was played quite a bit on MTV the following year.  The album ultimately peaked at #100 on the Billboard Albums chart.

I didn't discover the album until early in the 2000s after picking up a copy of Sweet's greatest hits compilation Time Capsule.  That album contained 4 tracks off the Girlfriend album that really impressed me, so I had to find out what else was going on here.  At that point in my life, this album, for lack of better words, really got through to me.

You always hear about people making their desert island list...  well, this album would definitely be on my list.

Now Hear This Show #2

We're back with the second episode of the Now Hear This show!

I did change things up a bit based on some feedback I received, so I do talk a little more on this episode, though I don't quite get into the music storytelling that I hope will be a feature on future shows (and on the re-do of the first show when I finally get around to doing that).

Here's what you will hear today, followed by a listening link and a download link:

Rubberband Man

Because I heard this in the car the other morning (it's on the American Top 40 I had loaded and in the car)...

It's the Spinners doing Rubberband Man on Midnight Special in 1976.  Thanks to YouTube, I've seen this many times, and always have to smile when I do...  the matching suits, the choreography, and most importantly, the song itself!  There's a level of something (maybe it's badassery, maybe it's something else) that I'm guessing has not been achieved since this performance.

Yankee Rose

Don't ask me why, but I got the urge to watch this video the other day (and not the edited down version...  I needed to see the crazy "my doctor says I need to take a laxative" intro).  Guess I just want to look back at the cheesy goodness that was mid-to-late 80s hair bands videos.

Anyway...  here's David Lee Roth's Yankee Rose video.

Austin City Limits: Steve Miller Band

A generous soul over at Zinhof shared a bunch of Austin City Limits shows recently, and I thought I'd share the Steve Miller Band show.

This show captures the band's performance back in February 2011, with most of the hits being played...  it's a great performance that any fan of Steve Miller should not miss.

Also, I need to note this is not the DVD release of this show, but instead, the PBS ACL broadcast from October 2011.

Reggae Kiss

Going with an oddity I found recently for this week's installment of the album of the week.

Thanks to Bruce Kulick's Twitter feed, I "discovered" this band called Reggae Kiss, which is exactly what you will think it is...  a band doing reggae versions of KISS classics.  While at first it may sound like a very bad idea, if you give this one a shot, you'll find that it actually works pretty well.

Now, as I mentioned I discovered this on Bruce's Twitter feed, the song he featured there is not on this album, leading me to believe there may be more out there...  but as of the time of this post, this is the only album I've found by this band.

If you want to hear some clips of the music on this album, you can check it out here.

What's Cookin'?

A couple of things to get out of the way here...  1) this is not a normal music post, but is music-related and 2) this is not the post I had originally scheduled for today.  Now that we have that out of the way...

With the passing of Meat Loaf the other day, I put in a request that a kind user over a Zinhof was able to fill for me.  It's an episode of Tales From The Crypt called What's Cookin'?  It's about the only episode of that show that I remember, and as you may have already guessed, it features the one and only Meat Loaf.

Not much else to say at this point other than if you're a fan of that show and you haven't seen this particular episode, download it and give it a watch...  it's a really good one!

Lunch Time On KUVO Jazz 01.17.2022

Switching things up a bit for this edition of Radio Show Saturday...

Today we bring you the New Music Monday version of Lunch Time On KUVO Jazz.  Hosted by Arturo Gomez, this show aired earlier this week (January 17) and featured new releases that had just arrived at the station.

A little while back, I did a post featuring KUVO (you can find it here).  As of right now, this is my favorite Jazz station, and one I listen to frequently as I enjoy the various shows, including this one (though Mr. Gomez tends to be a little long-winded at times).  As this is a NPR station, there's really no commercials, though there are event announcements as well as PSAs.

Here's the songs that were played on this show, to be followed by listening and download links:

Beasley's Blues  -  The Jazz All Stars
Latin Hattan  -  Mike Eyia
To Wes  -  Sean Fyfe Quartet
Rio De Janeiro Blue (Live)  -  Hope Diamond
Blue Vision  -  Eric Person & Houston Person
In Response To  -  Artifacts (featuring Tomeka Reid, Nicole Mitchell & Mike Reed)
I Got Thunder (And It Rings)  -  Dee Bell
Better Get It In Your Soul  -  Blue Moods
Don't Break  -  Immanuel Wilkins
Countdown  -  Lionel Louecke, Reuben Rogers & Eric Harland

Now Hear This Show #1

After 2 1/2 months of selecting songs, editing, voice recording, and doing it all over and over again, the first Now Hear This show is ready to go!  While it's not exactly what I had planned, it is a show I am happy with, and hope you will be to.

My original idea was to make like I was a DJ, playing songs and during breaks, telling little stories about the music.  Well, I didn't really care for my voice, so I ultimately incorporated an idea I've had for a few years now, sort of a one disc playlist thing with a little bit of talking.  However, I still wanted small breaks, so I came up with a series of transitions (which are short and to the point).  You'll hear a sound effect with the phrase "now hear this."  Funny thing about the phrase...  that is my voice.  I played around with the microphone settings to get as much reverb as possible (making it sound like I was in a cave) and spoke the words through a paper towel roll!  Hi-tech stuff right there!

Anyway...  enough about what I did to make it happen.  Let's get to the music!  Here is what you will hear today, followed by a link to listen (via Mixcloud...  I'm not sure if you need to sign up to hear it or not) as well as a link to download the show (if you so desire):

Music Time  -  Styx
Nutbush City Limits  -  Ike & Tina Turner
Illegal, Immoral And Fattening  -  Flo & Eddie
Holiday Road  -  Lindsey Buckingham
Chicken Fat  -  Mel Brown
Statesboro Blues  -  Taj Mahal
It's Alright  -  Waylon Jennings
Turn The Lights On  -  Big Sugar
Casino Queen  -  Wilco
Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely  -  Hüsker Dü
Rock Fort Rock  -  The Skatalites
Zydeco Boogaloo  -  Buckwheat Zydeco
Girl U Want  -  Devo
Yes We Can Can  -  The Pointer Sisters
Make You A Believer  -  Sass Jordan
Rock And Roll All Nite (Live)  -  KISS

Hope you'll enjoy the show!  And make sure to come back in a week as I'll have show #2 up and ready for you!

The Story Behind Hey Bulldog

I wasn't really looking for anything Beatles-wise when I came upon this video, so...

I thought this was a find worth sharing as I found it rather interesting.  I've always been a fan of Hey Bulldog, and have to say I'm a bit surprised at the notion that this is somehow a forgotten song.

And since it wasn't shown in its entirety in the story above, here's the promo video for Hey Bulldog.

Go Back

I've heard this song on several different programs over the past year or so, and heard it again this past weekend, so I thought I'd share.

Go Back was Crabby Appleton's only hit (it made it into the Top 40, while the album reached 175 on the Albums chart).  The band did record and release a second album that flopped, and they broke up shortly thereafter.

Here's Go Back, and for whatever reason, the video is played twice on this YouTube link.

Breaking The Chains

This edition of album of the week is going to be a bit different as we're featuring "an album so nice, they recorded it twice.

Breaking The Chains is an album by 80s metal band Dokken that came out here in the U.S. in 1983.  But it was also released in Europe back in 1981, and credited to Don Dokken as a solo album.  If you saw yesterday's post, the first 10 minutes or so from the video goes into a little detail about this.

First up is the 1981 European release, Breakin' The Chains.  I found this a few years back, and giving it a listen for the first time, found a different cover, very different mix, a different track list, and even a different song (lyrics) than what I was used to.  As an example, Live To Rock (Rock To Live) is a song called We're Illegal, and Paris Is Burning is a studio track simply titled Paris.  For those who know only the U.S. version, this one is a very interesting listen.

Now we get to the version I've owned for the past 36 years...  the 1983 U.S. release of Breaking The Chains (note the slight difference in the title).  Here, the mix is far more clear, and as mentioned above, the track listing is different.  Now, I've come to love this album over the years (just as I've grown a greater appreciation for Dokken in general), and it's still a regular listen for me.

Hope you enjoy this album (both versions) as much as I do!

Metal Mythos: Dokken

I'll start off this post with a warning...  the following video contains gratuitous cussing.

Okay...  now that that's out of the way...

Metal Mythos is an internet show I found 4 or 5 years back.  It's hosted by a guy going by the name Razor Fist, and if I'm not mistaken, he's based in the Phoenix area.  I'm also of the impression that he started off doing gaming shows before taking up Metal Mythos as a side project.

While I've enjoyed many of the episodes, I'm sharing the Dokken episode today as a bit of a lead-in for tomorrow's album of the week.  Now, despite Dokken being "devily music" (as described by Early Cuyler...  if you don't know what I'm talking about, find Squidbillies NOW and watch it), I am a fan of Dokken, especially their work in the 80s.  It was interesting watching this...  I had always known about the fighting within the band, but it paints George Lynch in a very bad light (in my opinion, deservedly so).  To be honest, once the 80s version of the band disintegrated, none of the members did anything of significance (again, in my opinion).

I'm going to shut up now (as reading over this, I'm rambling at this point) and share the episode...

Radio Show Update

This post is for a few of my friends out there who are aware that I am planning to do something of a music podcast/radio show.

Well, I've been working on it for about 2 1/2 months...  assembling songs, recording voice parts, and doing lots and lots of editing (just finding a crossfade program I was happy with proved to be a bigger challenge than I imagined).  I've had an actual program completed about a dozen times now, with scripted dialogue, spontaneous dialogue, and even one where I completely winged it.  But one thing has kept me from sharing it...  I really don't care for the way I sound!

With that in mind, I'm considering doing a program that's different than what I had originally planned...  having minimal talking from me, and going more with just the music instead.  With that in mind, I still have an idea or two for to fillers...  it just won't necessarily be my voice.

So be sure to keep an eye out as I'm hoping to be posting a show in the next week or two.

And most importantly, thank you to everyone for their encouragement!  There will be a show soon!

Wasted Years

Another song that's been stuck in my head is Wasted Years by Iron Maiden.  Not really sure why as I've not listened to it (or the Somewhere In Time album) in quite a while.

While I'm sure there are many out there who will argue with me on this one, I feel Iron Maiden peaked with the Somewhere In Time album, and nothing they've done since can come close to it.  Wasted Years was the first single released off the album, and is very representative of the album's overall sound.

Roxy Roller

At some point, everybody gets a song stuck in their head.  For the past few weeks, Roxy Roller by Sweeney Todd has been stuck in my head.

I originally heard the song in late November (when I recorded a radio show which played it).  I had put that show on a flash drive to listen to in the car a few weeks ago, and lo and behold, hearing it again got it stuck in my head.

For those who have never heard of them, Sweeney Todd was a Canadian band.  The singer on this song is none other than Nick Gilder (of Hot Child In The City fame).  Shortly after this song hit #1 in Canada, he left the band to pursue a solo career, and was eventually replaced by one Bryan Adams.

After seeing several versions of this on YouTube, I settled on this video, mainly because it offered the best sound quality on the song.  I have to admit that I'm impressed with the roller skating choreography in the video...  somebody really put a lot of work into making this!

The Lynx

While searching the internet for high definition radio streams last week, I came upon a "station" that billed itself as CRIK FM out of Calgary.  While it's not actually a terrestrial radio station, it's a fantastic site that's playing some great music over 5 feeds.

The feeds are 1) The Lynx Classic Hits, playing a little bit of everything, 2) The Lynx Super 70s, playing a great mix of everything from the 70s, 3) The Lynx Retro 80s, playing a great mix of everything from the 80s, 4) The Lynx Classic Rock, as advertised, a great mix of classic rock songs, and 5) The Lynx Disco Classics, which is playing everything disco, soul, and R&B.  And since it's coming out of Calgary, there's plenty of Canadian representation in the music as well!

You can find The Lynx here, and choose whatever feed suits you best.  I find myself jumping from station to station, and have heard great music on all 5!

Speak English Or Die

Coming off yesterday's post, it only seemed appropriate that the album of the week be the Stormtroopers Of Death's 1985 classic, Speak English Or Die.

While many will say they've never heard of S.O.D. or any of these songs, if you watched MTV's Headbangers Ball, you will surely recognize a few as they were used going into and coming out of the commercial breaks.

After Anthrax finished their Spreading The Disease album, there was still some studio time left.  Scott Ian and Charlie Benante called friends Dan Lilker and Billy Milano, practiced some songs, then recorded this album over the Independence Day weekend in 1985 (July 2, 3 & 5).  The album had some controversy due to the lyrics which addressed homosexuality, women, and foreign cultures.  As Dan Lilker has said, "the lyrics were never intended to be serious, just piss people off."  With a song title like Fuck The Middle East, how could they possibly go wrong?

Surprisingly, since it's release in 1985, this mostly "underground" album has sold over a million copies, and as mentioned yesterday, it was ABC's 20/20 that led me to "discover" S.O.D. for myself.

If you want to give the album a listen, you can do so here.

20/20: The Heavy Metal Episode

I was goofing around on YouTube, watching some random hair band features, when I came upon this...  the 20/20 Heavy Metal episode.

I had to laugh, because this is the very episode that led me to becoming a fan of the Stormtroopers Of Death (S.O.D.).  I hadn't heard of them, but when the scene at the high school came on and the kids being interviewed said that's what they were listening to, I thought this is something I need to check out.

Living in southwest Oklahoma at the time (and in high school), we usually got out of town a couple times a month, and while I can't remember exactly where we went that weekend (would have been either Lawton, OK or Wichita Falls, TX), I was able to find S.O.D.'s Speak English Or Die cassette at the mall.  Of course, I snapped it up as quick as I could.  Upon the return trip home, the cassette went into the Walkman, and let's just say I was blown away by what I heard (roughly 23 minutes of sonic fury)!

Now that I've gotten that story out...  I always found it funny that a major network decided to dedicate a TV show that was trying to warn parents of the great evil of heavy metal music that their children were listening to, actually sent me in the direction of a band (that at the time) I hadn't heard of, and an album that I still enjoy regularly.

And while I'm at it (and since she's also featured in the story), I'd like to send a special FUCK YOU out to Al & Tipper Gore, who were too self-absorbed to do any actual parenting themselves, so they decided the government needed to step in and do it for everybody (look up the P.M.R.C. if I've confused you in any way).

Here it is...  the infamous 20/20 Heavy Metal episode!

Electrified: The Guitar Revolution

I downloaded this from the shoutbox over at Zinhof just after Christmas...  it's a documentary that was shown on PBS America called Electrified: The Guitar Revolution.

Here is the description from Wikipedia:

Featuring professional musicians and historians, this captivating film tells the story of the electric guitar, the instrument that transformed popular music in the twentieth century.  In the 1920s, America was swinging to the sounds of the big bands of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller.  The limitations of the guitar effectively prevented it from making it heard.  It was time to harness the power of electricity to increase the volume.  Inventors looked at other devices which translated electronic signals into sound waves and applied the same principles to a plucked string.  The 1950s saw the birth of rock and roll and the commercial rivalry between manufacturers Fender and Gibson as the mass-produced electric guitar became the young musician's instrument of choice.  Pedal controls soon followed, enabling guitarists to create their own personal sound through the use of echo and distortion, exemplified by the arrival of Jimi Hendrix, who combined an impeccable technique with an understanding of electronic effects  Fashions come and go in any artistic genre, but the electric guitar remains the world's most popular instrument, as it has for the last 70 years.

All in all, it's a pretty good documentary that gives a good insight to how the guitar has evolved over time.

Fire On High

If you ever find yourself doubting the genius of Jeff Lynne, just listen to this song.

Fire On High may be the greatest song in Lynne's vast catalog (which includes The Idle Race, The Move, Electric Light Orchestra, and The Traveling Wilburys).  While you can occasionally hear this song on classic rock radio stations, these days, it doesn't get nearly the amount a play it deserves (in my opinion).  And for those who were sports fans in the 70s, this song was the opening theme for the CBS Sports Spectacular show.

Greatest Guitar Solos Of All Time?

Another article I recently stumbled upon...

While I wouldn't put most of these songs on my list, there are a couple notable solos listed in the article...  namely Cliffs Of Dover by Eric Johnson and Highway Star by Deep Purple.  The other 18 songs on this list, well, I'll let you debate that!

Root Down

Now that the holidays have passed, I can get back to my album of the week feature...

This week's album of the week is Root Down, an absolutely funky jazz classic by Jimmy Smith.

This album was recorded on February 8, 1972, at Los Angeles's Bombay Bicycle Club, and captures a performance Smith gave with a relatively young supporting band who were clearly influenced by modern funk and rock.  And for all of the Beastie Boys fans out there, this album contains the song Root Down (And Get It) which they sampled for their song Root Down.

It has been said that this album is non-stop funky jazz at its best, and some have even gone so far to say it is the best album in Jimmy Smith's vast catalog.  While I won't go so far as to call it his best, it is a damn fine album that is well worth a listen.

The Archies

Since I went with The Monkees yesterday, I thought I'd offer up a few albums by The Archies today.

The Archies were a fictional band that was related to the Archies comics, which also spawned a TV show.  In context of the series, the band consists of Archie Andrews (vocals, guitar), Reggie Mantle (bass), Forsythe "Jughead" Jones (drums), Veronica Lodge (vocals, keyboards), and Betty Cooper (vocals, percussion).  In reality, the music was performed by studio musicians assembled by Don Kirshner, with their biggest hit being Sugar, Sugar which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over six million copies.

The Monkees In Mono

The Decades TV channel ran a 2 day Monkees marathon a couple weekends ago (just after Mike Nesmith's passing)...  I watched as much of it as I could!

That marathon got me thinking about a project I meant for my last blog, but I never got around to doing it.  That project was sharing the first five Monkees albums in mono.  Yes, I know many out there consider mono to be sacrilege when there's a stereo version available, but I like listening to 60s pop in mono, and since this is my blog, that's what I'm going to share today!

Now, while there was a Monkees In Mono official release in 2014, I cheated and took the mono versions from the super deluxe editions that were released earlier, did a bit of editing, and basically "created" the mono albums available in this post.
