Switching things up a bit for this edition of Radio Show Saturday...

Today we bring you the New Music Monday version of Lunch Time On KUVO Jazz.  Hosted by Arturo Gomez, this show aired earlier this week (January 17) and featured new releases that had just arrived at the station.

A little while back, I did a post featuring KUVO (you can find it here).  As of right now, this is my favorite Jazz station, and one I listen to frequently as I enjoy the various shows, including this one (though Mr. Gomez tends to be a little long-winded at times).  As this is a NPR station, there's really no commercials, though there are event announcements as well as PSAs.

Now Hear This Show #1

After 2 1/2 months of selecting songs, editing, voice recording, and doing it all over and over again, the first Now Hear This show is ready to go!  While it's not exactly what I had planned, it is a show I am happy with, and hope you will be to.

My original idea was to make like I was a DJ, playing songs and during breaks, telling little stories about the music.  Well, I didn't really care for my voice, so I ultimately incorporated an idea I've had for a few years now, sort of a one disc playlist thing with a little bit of talking.  However, I still wanted small breaks, so I came up with a series of transitions (which are short and to the point).  You'll hear a sound effect with the phrase "now hear this."  Funny thing about the phrase...  that is my voice.  I played around with the microphone settings to get as much reverb as possible (making it sound like I was in a cave) and spoke the words through a paper towel roll!  Hi-tech stuff right there!

The Story Behind Hey Bulldog

I wasn't really looking for anything Beatles-wise when I came upon this video, so...

I thought this was a find worth sharing as I found it rather interesting.  I've always been a fan of Hey Bulldog, and have to say I'm a bit surprised at the notion that this is somehow a forgotten song.

And since it wasn't shown in its entirety in the story above, here's the promo video for Hey Bulldog.

Go Back

I've heard this song on several different programs over the past year or so, and heard it again this past weekend, so I thought I'd share.

Go Back was Crabby Appleton's only hit (it made it into the Top 40, while the album reached 175 on the Albums chart).  The band did record and release a second album that flopped, and they broke up shortly thereafter.

Breaking The Chains

This edition of album of the week is going to be a bit different as we're featuring "an album so nice, they recorded it twice.

Breaking The Chains is an album by 80s metal band Dokken that came out here in the U.S. in 1983.  But it was also released in Europe back in 1981, and credited to Don Dokken as a solo album.  If you saw yesterday's post, the first 10 minutes or so from the video goes into a little detail about this.

First up is the 1981 European release, Breakin' The Chains.  I found this a few years back, and giving it a listen for the first time, found a different cover, very different mix, a different track list, and even a different song (lyrics) than what I was used to.  As an example, Live To Rock (Rock To Live) is a song called We're Illegal, and Paris Is Burning is a studio track simply titled Paris.  For those who know only the U.S. version, this one is a very interesting listen.

Don Dokken: Breakin' The Chains (1981)

Now we get to the version I've owned for the past 36 years...  the 1983 U.S. release of Breaking The Chains (note the slight difference in the title).  Here, the mix is far more clear, and as mentioned above, the track listing is different.  Now, I've come to love this album over the years (just as I've grown a greater appreciation for Dokken in general), and it's still a regular listen for me.

Metal Mythos: Dokken

I'll start off this post with a warning...  the following video contains gratuitous cussing.

Okay...  now that that's out of the way...

Metal Mythos is an internet show I found 4 or 5 years back.  It's hosted by a guy going by the name Razor Fist, and if I'm not mistaken, he's based in the Phoenix area.  I'm also of the impression that he started off doing gaming shows before taking up Metal Mythos as a side project.

While I've enjoyed many of the episodes, I'm sharing the Dokken episode today as a bit of a lead-in for tomorrow's album of the week.  Now, despite Dokken being "devily music" (as described by Early Cuyler...  if you don't know what I'm talking about, find Squidbillies NOW and watch it), I am a fan of Dokken, especially their work in the 80s.  It was interesting watching this...  I had always known about the fighting within the band, but it paints George Lynch in a very bad light (in my opinion, deservedly so).  To be honest, once the 80s version of the band disintegrated, none of the members did anything of significance (again, in my opinion).

I'm going to shut up now (as reading over this, I'm rambling at this point) and share the episode...

Radio Show Update

This post is for a few of my friends out there who are aware that I am planning to do something of a music podcast/radio show.

Well, I've been working on it for about 2 1/2 months...  assembling songs, recording voice parts, and doing lots and lots of editing (just finding a crossfade program I was happy with proved to be a bigger challenge than I imagined).  I've had an actual program completed about a dozen times now, with scripted dialogue, spontaneous dialogue, and even one where I completely winged it.  But one thing has kept me from sharing it...  I really don't care for the way I sound!

With that in mind, I'm considering doing a program that's different than what I had originally planned...  having minimal talking from me, and going more with just the music instead.  With that in mind, I still have an idea or two for to fillers...  it just won't necessarily be my voice.

So be sure to keep an eye out as I'm hoping to be posting a show in the next week or two.

And most importantly, thank you to everyone for their encouragement!  There will be a show soon!

Wasted Years

Another song that's been stuck in my head is Wasted Years by Iron Maiden.  Not really sure why as I've not listened to it (or the Somewhere In Time album) in quite a while.

While I'm sure there are many out there who will argue with me on this one, I feel Iron Maiden peaked with the Somewhere In Time album, and nothing they've done since can come close to it.  Wasted Years was the first single released off the album, and is very representative of the album's overall sound.

Roxy Roller

At some point, everybody gets a song stuck in their head.  For the past few weeks, Roxy Roller by Sweeney Todd has been stuck in my head.

I originally heard the song in late November (when I recorded a radio show which played it).  I had put that show on a flash drive to listen to in the car a few weeks ago, and lo and behold, hearing it again got it stuck in my head.

For those who have never heard of them, Sweeney Todd was a Canadian band.  The singer on this song is none other than Nick Gilder (of Hot Child In The City fame).  Shortly after this song hit #1 in Canada, he left the band to pursue a solo career, and was eventually replaced by one Bryan Adams.

After seeing several versions of this on YouTube, I settled on this video, mainly because it offered the best sound quality on the song.  I have to admit that I'm impressed with the roller skating choreography in the video...  somebody really put a lot of work into making this!
