Girlfriend

This week's album of the week is Matthew Sweet's masterpiece, Girlfriend.

Released in October 1991, I first learned of Matthew Sweet when I heard the single Girlfriend on the radio (it reached #4 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart).  Oddly enough, I somehow missed the video which was played quite a bit on MTV the following year.  The album ultimately peaked at #100 on the Billboard Albums chart.

I didn't discover the album until early in the 2000s after picking up a copy of Sweet's greatest hits compilation Time Capsule.  That album contained 4 tracks off the Girlfriend album that really impressed me, so I had to find out what else was going on here.  At that point in my life, this album, for lack of better words, really got through to me.

You always hear about people making their desert island list...  well, this album would definitely be on my list.

Rubberband Man

Because I heard this in the car the other morning (it's on the American Top 40 I had loaded and in the car)...

It's the Spinners doing Rubberband Man on Midnight Special in 1976.  Thanks to YouTube, I've seen this many times, and always have to smile when I do...  the matching suits, the choreography, and most importantly, the song itself!  There's a level of something (maybe it's badassery, maybe it's something else) that I'm guessing has not been achieved since this performance.

Yankee Rose

Don't ask me why, but I got the urge to watch this video the other day (and not the edited down version...  I needed to see the crazy "my doctor says I need to take a laxative" intro).  Guess I just want to look back at the cheesy goodness that was mid-to-late 80s hair bands videos.

Austin City Limits: Steve Miller Band

A generous soul over at Zinhof shared a bunch of Austin City Limits shows recently, and I thought I'd share the Steve Miller Band show.

This show captures the band's performance back in February 2011, with most of the hits being played...  it's a great performance that any fan of Steve Miller should not miss.

Also, I need to note this is not the DVD release of this show, but instead, the PBS ACL broadcast from October 2011.

Reggae Kiss

Going with an oddity I found recently for this week's installment of the album of the week.

Thanks to Bruce Kulick's Twitter feed, I "discovered" this band called Reggae Kiss, which is exactly what you will think it is...  a band doing reggae versions of KISS classics.  While at first it may sound like a very bad idea, if you give this one a shot, you'll find that it actually works pretty well.

Now, as I mentioned I discovered this on Bruce's Twitter feed, the song he featured there is not on this album, leading me to believe there may be more out there...  but as of the time of this post, this is the only album I've found by this band.

What's Cookin'?

A couple of things to get out of the way here...  1) this is not a normal music post, but is music-related and 2) this is not the post I had originally scheduled for today.  Now that we have that out of the way...

With the passing of Meat Loaf the other day, I put in a request that a kind user over a Zinhof was able to fill for me.  It's an episode of Tales From The Crypt called What's Cookin'?  It's about the only episode of that show that I remember, and as you may have already guessed, it features the one and only Meat Loaf.

Not much else to say at this point other than if you're a fan of that show and you haven't seen this particular episode, download it and give it a watch...  it's a really good one!

Lunch Time On KUVO Jazz 01.17.2022

Switching things up a bit for this edition of Radio Show Saturday...

Today we bring you the New Music Monday version of Lunch Time On KUVO Jazz.  Hosted by Arturo Gomez, this show aired earlier this week (January 17) and featured new releases that had just arrived at the station.

A little while back, I did a post featuring KUVO (you can find it here).  As of right now, this is my favorite Jazz station, and one I listen to frequently as I enjoy the various shows, including this one (though Mr. Gomez tends to be a little long-winded at times).  As this is a NPR station, there's really no commercials, though there are event announcements as well as PSAs.

Lunch Time On KUVO Jazz 01.17.2022

Now Hear This Show #1

After 2 1/2 months of selecting songs, editing, voice recording, and doing it all over and over again, the first Now Hear This show is ready to go!  While it's not exactly what I had planned, it is a show I am happy with, and hope you will be to.

My original idea was to make like I was a DJ, playing songs and during breaks, telling little stories about the music.  Well, I didn't really care for my voice, so I ultimately incorporated an idea I've had for a few years now, sort of a one disc playlist thing with a little bit of talking.  However, I still wanted small breaks, so I came up with a series of transitions (which are short and to the point).  You'll hear a sound effect with the phrase "now hear this."  Funny thing about the phrase...  that is my voice.  I played around with the microphone settings to get as much reverb as possible (making it sound like I was in a cave) and spoke the words through a paper towel roll!  Hi-tech stuff right there!
